Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine
Department of Thoracic Surgery
Department of Thoracic Surgery was established in 2001 and provides service in Hacettepe Adult Hospital.
In our department, diagnoses and treatments of all of the diseases about thoracic surgery are performed. These diseases are malignant and benign diseases of lungs, pleura, chest wall and thoracic cavity. Also, congenital disorders relevant to thoracic cavity and chest wall are also treated.
Malignant lung diseases
Lung cancer one of the most common causes of death in Turkey and world-wide. The treatment of patients with lung cancer which has progressed to surgical stage is performed successfully in our department. Surgical interventions can be palliative or curative. Approximately 2-4 units of blood are required for the surgery (the blood provided from patient relatives is not necessarily required to be in the same blood type with the patient as Blood Bank of our hospital exchanges these as needed). Subsequent to the surgery, patients are monitored with all of the opportunities of modern medicine in intensive care unit by a minimum of 3 physicians and staff qualified with special training. The patient whose general condition has improved is transferred to the ward. After medication treatment and diet are arranged, the patient is planned to be discharged within 6 to 8 days on condition that clinical condition of the patient allows so. The patient is called for follow-up examinations periodically.
Benign lung diseases
Benign lung diseases are also treated successfully in our department. A diagnosed patient needs 2-4 units of blood donation for surgery. The blood type of donated blood does not have to match with the blood type of the patient. Under normal conditions, the duration of staying in intensive care unit is 1 day after surgery. After medication treatment and diet are arranged, the patient is planned to be discharged within 6 to 8 days and the patient is called for follow-up examinations periodically.
Congenital thoracic cavity and chest wall diseases
Various diseases develop due to malformation of lungs and chest wall in the womb. Primary diseases are pigeon chest and pectus excavatum. These anomalies can have a negative effect on cardiac and respiratory functions as well as posing aesthetical problems. Aesthetic form can be corrected and permanent cardiac and respiratory malfunctions can be prevented with surgical interventions.
Other common autoimmune disease is myasteia gravis. Generally, it occurs due to the disease of thymus which is an organ that produces cells for the defense mechanisms of the body. Surgical removal of thymus tissue is the main factor in the treatment of this disease.
