The treatment and monitoring of our patients are carried out making use of the sophisticated technical methods required by modern medicine at the department of Radiation Oncology. The radiotherapy services applied in our department are carried out by members of faculty, radiotherapy physics specialists, research assistants, technicians and nurses. The department of Radiation Oncology is located on -1 and and -2 floors of Hacettepe Oncology Hospital covering a total area of 2500 square meters. It has external and brachytherapy (intratumor or relevant organ) treatment options.
In brachytherapy we have a high dose speed device that enables outpatient or inpatient therapy. With this device, high treatment dose can be applied safely through close-range radiation for gynecologic tumors and head-neck tumors being in the first place, and many other types of tumors. This device has state-of-the-art technology among their peers.
Totally 6 devices are used for external therapies. Four of them are latest technology Linear Accelerators, and they can produce 6 MV and 18 MV X-rays, and 6 different levels of electron beams. Thus, deep and skin-deep tumors could be possible to heal. Two of these devices (Cyberknife® and Novalis®) can carry out focal irradiation (stereotactic radiotherapy), could only be found at certain centers of the world, and have the mechanisms with state-of-the-art technology.
In addition, our department has 2 simulators (Conventional simulator and BT simulator) and one C-armed X-ray device used for detecting regions in order to prepare the patients for the treatment.
We have 3 computerized treatment planning devices that can carry out sophisticated, three dimensional planning and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), thus enabling us to plan our treatment in a healthy and detailed manner. Accuray Cyberknife® and Novalis® devices, on the other hand, have their own peculiar planning systems, and they are equipped enough to perform any kind of modern planning including respiration and tumor monitoring. A comprehensive, technical infrastructure and network system that is necessary for a high quality treatment completes the equipments of our department.
Stereotactic radiotherapy depends on beams that focus on the same center from many different angles in order to apply maximum dose to the tumor to be treated and minimum dose to the surrounding healthy tissue with the information obtained through imaging techniques (computerized tomography, magnetic resonance, positron emission tomography, angiography). If the therapy is carried out in more than one fraction it is called “Stereotactic radiotherapy”, however if it is performed in a single fraction it is called “Stereotactic radiosurgery.” One of the most important latest developments in this field is that besides intracranial lesions stereotactic radiosurgery can be applied for extracranial tumors with Cyberknife.
Cyberknife is a radiosurgery system that has a robotic armed linear accelerator and robotic table. The robotic system carries a 6 MV linear accelerator on it. Unlike other linear accelerators its collimator system is conus shaped. The AxumTM therapy table is robotic and moves according to the position of Cyberknife. It is the latest member of CyRISTM Multiplan planning system product range and has the latest features of dose optimization technology. This planning system can use forward or reverse planning algorhythm which is isocentric or not. The SynchronyTM system enables Cyberknife to move in harmony with the movements of patients during inspirium and exprium and overcomes the problem of missing the target tumor position which changes due to respiration. Found in certain centers around the world, Cyberknife is unique with its trademark technology.
